Cuba is a country like no other, it’s unique history, culture and politique sets it apart from all others. It is also a Caribbean island with sun kissed shores and waters of cerulean, so there is every reason why Cuba should be on your travel bucket list.
No trip to Cuba would be complete without seeing the country’s capital Havana and the city provides travellers with a heady mix of beauty and fiery passion. Salsa is the soundtrack to which those visiting Havana will get lost in as they meander through the same colourful and vibrant streets that were once home to Che Guevara and Fidel Castro.
Where to Stay
When it comes to accommodation many choose to stay in a Casas Particular, which is a private residency, but Cuba also has its fair share of chic hotels such as the Hotel Saragota which commands spectacular views of Havana from its rooftop Bar Piscina Mirador.
Havana acts as a base for the majority of people who visit, but further afield there is plenty more to explore.
Travel east from Havana, along Cuba’s northern coast and you will soon come across some of the most beautiful beaches on the planet. Playa Los Flamencos, for example, boasts 22km of white sand and just offshore there are islands from which rich coral reefs can be explored.
Visit a Cuban beach bar and you can sample one of the country’s most famous exports, a Mojito, the traditional highball.
Alejandro Robaina Tobacco Plantation
Vuelta Abajo, in the west, is home to the Alejandro Robaina Tobacco Plantation, where you can see, first hand, how the tobacco for Cuba’s world famous cigars is grown. Cigars made in this region of Cuba, such as Cohiba Behikes can fetch as much as $18,000 per box.
Tours of the plantation last for 25 minutes and offer a fascinating insight into the process of making aromatic tobacco.
A Walk on the Wild Side
Cuba is also popular with trekkers and a hike through the La Plata mountain trail will uncover the revolutionary base camps used by Fidel Castro in the early 1950s. Travelling through the countryside is also one of the best ways to enjoy Cuba’s sometimes overlooked natural beauty.
Cuba is a place that has to be experienced, as even the best penned descriptions cannot pay it the justice it deserves and so if it isn’t already on you travel bucket list you know what to do.
