What Foods To Eat Less Of For Better Health

Healthy Foods

There are a lot of stories in the news lately about foods that could be damaging to our health. There are even claims that certain foods could cause cancer. However, there is also a lot of contradicting information. For example, it can be hard to know whether you should be avoiding sweeteners or sugar, or both!

The increase in cancer is scary especially when those cancers are preventable or are made worse. We want to trust that things that are made available to us are safe, but this is not always the case. Even medicine given by doctors can sometimes have adverse side effects. Tasigna, for example, was a cancer drug which has been linked to several complications. It is, therefore, partly up to us to do our research and make decisions based on our health and our families’ health. With that in mind, here are some foods which you should probably be eating less of.

Processed meat
Meats such as bacon, sausage, ham, cured and dry meats should only be enjoyed in moderation. They contain many harmful chemicals that are not found in fresh meat.

Processed meat has been linked to heart disease, high blood pressure, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, as well as stomach and bowel cancers.

An occasional treat is probably ok, but you should be limiting your intake of these foods.

Sugar

When it comes to sugar the science is complicated. Natural sugars such as those found on fruit are good for us. However, when it comes to sugary drinks and sweats, we need to be limiting our intake.

Sugar causes our energy levels to spike and plummet which can leave us with fatigue, headaches, mood swings and it can also lead to a false hunger, making us eat more. Sugar increases the risk of obesity, diabetes, gum disease, and heart disease and can even negatively impact our immune system.

Sugar can be hidden in some foods so be sure to check the nutritional information. For example, many kinds of cereal, fruit juices and smoothies contain high levels of sugar.

You may be wondering about sweaters as a replacement for sugar. The NHS claims that sweeteners that are approved in the UK are safe. Although if you want to cut down on sugar then you may want to avoid sweet things to lessen your cravings.

Alcohol
The more you drink the more at risk you are of developing certain cancers, including, head and neck, liver, breast and colorectal.

It can also make you put on weight and it affects your sleep quality. You may feel that you are getting a better night’s sleep after drinking but the brain processes that are integral to a good night’s sleep do not function properly. This can affect your memory and learning ability. In short, it will prevent you from performing to the best of your ability.

The occasional drink is ok but binge drinking or drinking over the recommended intake regularly can be very damaging to your health.
