Could not love a quote more.
I am obsessed with lighting in our home. Each room has a different need, a different reason for lighting and sometimes, it has multiple needs. Apart from the obvious, original use of lighting, way back when it was first invented, for me, how we light our space creates different moods, different feelings, and it’s way more complicated than “put the big light on will ya……”
The way we use light in our home is important. We’re quite unique, in that we have no ceiling lights at all in our living space, the kitchen has it’s spotlights of course, what (semi) modern house doesn’t have those these days, but our living room has 4 tiny wall uplights that blend into the paintwork, with the rest of the lighting coming from lamps & candles.
Obviously, when we’re reading or working at the table, there’s a need for decent, strong lighting, but apart from that, we like to rely on, what I think they call “atmospheric lighting” uh huh.
Sounds sexy doesn’t it?
The bedroom is the same. We do (weirdly) have a ceiling light in the bedroom – but it rarely gets used. As much as I love reading, I don’t seem to do enough of it in bed, I’m more of a ‘scroll through my phone while the TV is on in the background’ kind of person, which doesn’t really lend itself to a decent nights sleep, but, old habits are hard to break! I do have some very pretty fairy lights around the bed as well as my gorgeous salt rock lamp, so they add a little night time glow (no one wants harsh lighting going on in a bedroom, that is not the place for cold overhead strip lights!)
I am always on the look out for bedside lamps. But, me being me, I’m just a little bit fussy and, so far, absolutely nothing has captured my heart. I don’t even know what it is I’m looking for, I just know that, when I know, I’ll know.
You get me?
I want something modern, but not harsh. Something vintage but not old fashioned. Something different but not crazy. You see where I’m struggling? I found a gorgeous flexible spotlight style in TK Maxx years ago, but, being TK Maxx they only had one – and while I love things to not match, in a bedroom setting, the two sides of the bed have got to work together.
I’m such a contradiction.
I’ve found some gorgeous green table lamps from Lights.co.uk – and they’re almost pretty perfect. I love the colour (green is my favourite) and how they don’t quite scream ‘bedside lamp’ at you. Plus, they’re flexible, so I could swing mine overhead to read a book in bed, without waking T up, and, AND, bonus of a bedside light is, you don’t have to get out of bed to turn it off.
Why don’t we have that American clappy light thing over here yet?
Once I’ve sorted the bedroom lighting out, my next project is garden lighting. Yes, that’s totally a thing. In my house anyway…..! I’m thinking pretty little solar lights, (no need to pay for electric in a garden) dotted around the patio area, festoon lighting in the trees and around the fencing – I love that word, festoon. Add in a heater, light up the chimnea & pour a glass of something nice and I think I’m pretty much set for the summer evenings.
